Golden Triangle
The Golden Triangle is a significant economic region where three countries converge: Thailand (Chiang Rai), Laos (Bokeo Province), and Myanmar (Tachileik, Shan State). It’s an area where the Mekong River and Ruak River meet, commonly known as the ‘Sop Ruak’ area. It is located in Wiang Subdistrict, Chiang Saen District, Chiang Rai Province.
The name ‘Golden Triangle’ has historical origins. In the past, this region was involved in opium cultivation and trade, with gold being used as currency. Unfortunately, this association led to a negative reputation for the Golden Triangle due to its association with drug use. However, later on, there was a development project called ‘Doi Tung Project’ initiated by Her Royal Highness Princess Srinagarindra (the Princess Mother of King Rama IX). Her Highness aimed to raise awareness about the dangers of opium and improve the living conditions of the hill tribe people in Thailand. As a result, opium cultivation ceased in the area.
Today, the Golden Triangle is well-known as a border town tourist destination. It features a pier where tourists can enjoy the beauty of the Mekong River, which flows through the borders of all three countries. Additionally, local markets are selling traditional goods, making it an essential trade hub for Thailand.
